Bannon wins state — again

Martha Bannon, for the Chronicle

ALBUQUERQUE — Maddie Bannon, former Angel Fire resident, successfully defended her Level 9 All-Around title at the 2008 New Mexico State Gymnastics Championships.
Maddie had a cumulative score of 36.95 at the meet, held March 29 at Sandia Prep School in Albuquerque. Hitting all four routines, she also won the Balance Beam title with a score of 9.25 and took silver medals on Vault (9.10), Bars 9.35 and Floor (9.20). Bannon now has nine state titles in her career. “It felt great to win state again, I was pleased with all my performances. I had a demanding regular season and stressful training circumstances towards the end with the Moreno Valley Gymnastics (MVG) program closing. I was extremely proud of being able to compete well but I did miss my teammate, Kiowa Montoya, who was out with an injury and unable to compete at state,” commented Maddie.
Bannon’s post-season will continue. She has qualified to compete at the Level 9 Regional Championships in Wichita, Kansas, April 19. Success at that meet could lead Bannon to the USA Gymnastics National Championships; taking the next step depends on her All-Around placement.
Maddie, a former MVG team member, is now training at Gold Cup Gymnastics in Albuquerque.
