Track squads run away with District 1A Championships

Leroy Chavez, for the Chronicle

CIMARRON — The Cimarron track teams used quality depth in all areas to capture the District 1A Championships in both the boys and girls divisions Saturday, May 3. The district tournament was held in Cimarron.
“The field event people put us in a position to win the championship, and the runners held their own,” said Ram coach Joe Giglia.
“This has been a tough year with injuries and all, and being able to win both championships was big for this team — we surprised a lot of people. State will be icing on the cake for us, as we’ll contend for individual championships in both divisions, but we do not have enough depth to compete for a team title.”

In the girl’s division, the Lady Rams scored 160 points to outdistance Roy at 138, Springer 55, Des Moines 27, and Maxwell 25. The championship is the eleventh consecutive title for the girl’s team and the 17th in 18 years.
“We continued the tradition and hope the win will give us momentum going into the state meet and into the 2009 season,” said Giglia.
“The boys won the district title for the first time since 2002 and have plenty of youth to be a force in years to come.”
The Ram boys scored 149 to outdistance Springer with 106 points, while Maxwell scored 58, Roy 46, Des Moines 28, and Wagon Mound 16.
Outstanding individual gold medal efforts were turned in by Ashley Long in the javelin, Renee Montoya in the 100-meter hurdles, Annie Stirling in the pole vault, Madison Coss in the shot, and Nadia Gonzales in the discus.
Gold medal efforts for the boys were delivered by Isaac Trujillo in the 800, Eddie Nelson in the pole vault and long jump, Daniel Pavletich in the high jump and discus, and Jake Arko in the shot and javelin.
“Almost every individual scored in one manner or another, so it was a total team effort,” Giglia said.
“Even our injured runners managed to score in some of the field events — everyone worked hard for the team and the results speak for themselves. I was very proud of everyone’s effort.”
Giglia also had kudos to all the volunteers that helped to make the district track meet and both home meets a big success.
The Running Rams will now travel to Albuquerque to compete in the State Class A championships scheduled for Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 at the University of New Mexico Track and Field complex.
