• Annual Ice Fishing Tournament: This year the tournament will be Martin Luther King weekend, Saturday, Jan. 19, on Eagle Nest Lake followed by a chilli dinner that night hosted by the Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce.
• Ghostly apparitions: Staff and visitors at the Historic Laguna Vista Lodge, Restaurant and Saloon have reported strange occurrences and the hotel reportedly has a lady ghost who lives upstairs and visits the dining room on occasion using a hidden staircase.
What’s New?
• Check out the new Lakeview Trail: The first section starts at the Moreno Day Use area of Eagle Nest Lake State Park and comes out near the intersection of Highways 38 and 64; the second starts across the street from Golden Eagle RV Park and ends at the park marina. Maps can be found at locations all over Eagle Nest.
• Eagle Nest has seen a number of new businesses come to town (and new owners of existing businesses) including New Mexico High Peaks Barbell Club, one of only three certified U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Facilities in New Mexico and Mammoth Mill & Log.
Don't Miss...
• Ice fishing usually begins in January: Anglers try their hand at landing kokanee salmon, rainbow trout and perch. Local guides and fishing gear are available in abundance. Fishing shops will help you get equipped and dispense plenty of advice on where the big ones are and places to avoid.
• Shopping: Therma Drive is no more than a mile long with shops that carry locally made crafts and fine arts, sculpture, sterling silver jewelry, Indian jewelry, antiques, pottery, a kitchen shop, candies, clothing, souvenirs, T-shirts and much more. Visitors can take a break from shopping in one of Eagle Nest’s down-home restaurants or grab a cappuccino before heading out for more.

Erwin: “The first time we came to the valley, we were crosscountry skiing at Enchanted Forest in Red River and one day we drove the circle. It’s just breathtaking coming down from Red River, seeing the valley and the lake, blue sky, lots of snow.… It’s God’s country. It’s the greatest place. I don’t think I’ve found a better place. I’ve always loved the mountains … fresh air and sunshine … nice
people. If we have to wait on a corner for one or two cars to go by we think it’s a traffic jam. It’s really a blessing.”
Gabriele: “I like living here because of the climate, the fabulous weather. It’s just a cute little community.”
